The Spooky Charm of the Halloween Season

As the days grow shorter and the air turns crisper, there's no better way to celebrate the arrival of fall and Halloween than by dressing your home with cozy, seasonal decor. Whether you're a fan of the vibrant colors of autumn or the spooky charm of Halloween, decorating your living space can truly get you in the spirit of the season.

We moved a handful of times over the last five years so I’ve held off on buying seasonal decor and enjoyed the spooky houses near me. It was very hard to resist the cute ghosts and Santa Clauses in all of the seasonal aisles year after year. However, since we are now settled into our new home, I am so excited to finally do some seasonal decorating. Wanting to keep budget in mind, I found so many budget-friendly pieces that really leaned into the spooky charm of Halloween.

Mantel

  • I originally bought this spooky spooky scary skeleton for my daughter as a toy, not thinking it would be actual decor, but one night when I was picking up her toys I rested it on my mantel and that’s where he now lives. I love him. My daughter now says goodnight and good morning to him daily. He reminds me of the elf on the shelf, but just the skeleton on the mantel.

  • To help set the mood for the holiday, I found these eerie, moody, black-tapered candles to swap into my candle holders. Perfect little seasonal swap without too much effort.

  • I love finding seasonal decor at Michaels or Joann Fabrics because they almost always have their seasonal items marked down. I purchased a small and a large black and white pumpkin that perfectly complemented the skeleton on the other side of the mantel. I also saw a ceramic ghost with the cutest face that I will be returning for when they mark down their Halloween items even further.

  • The bats are just cool. They are super inexpensive and make a big impact. They’re fun to add anywhere in your house!

  • Pumpkins. Pumpkins. Pumpkins. We do a few weekend activities in the fall that always include leaving the activity with a pumpkin so we end up with a lot. The funkier the pumpkin the better. Just has to have a cute stem.

Kitchen Counter Decor

  • Candles create a warm and inviting atmosphere in any home adding the flickering candle to my kitchen makes it so cozy. I am loving Trader Joe’s seasonal scented candles that evoke the essence of fall, such as pumpkin vanilla, autumn leaves, spiced chai, and maple sugar. Nothing is better than lighting that candle on a crisp fall Sunday with football on in the background and dinner cooking.

  • I love this glass pumpkin candle. I totally thought it would cost more when I picked it up to add to my cart, but to my surprise, the small only cost $5, and the medium was $10. I will probably pick up another before the season ends.

  • I needed some height so my tchotchkes did not get lost in the daily shuffle on the counter. I stumbled upon this Halloweeny pedestal up from Target that works perfectly.

Gus the Ghost DIY Dupe

For a personal touch, consider crafting your own fall and Halloween decor. You can create your own wreaths, paint and decorate pumpkins, and make spooky candle holders. DIY decor not only adds a unique and creative flair to your home but can also be a fun family activity. I couldn’t help but make the viral Gus the Ghost DIY dupe this year. Here are the materials you’ll need and the quickest intstructions:

Directions: Push the styrofoam ball into the top of all three ends of the tomato cage. Drape the fabric over the styrofoam ball. Cut two ovals out of the felt for the ghosts’s eyes and apply them on the styrofoam head. If you want to add a pumpkin, center the pumpkin at the ghost’s arm heights and hot glue the pumpkin to the fabric on both sides of the pumpkin.

Fall and Halloween are seasons filled with warmth and fun, and your home's decor can reflect that spirit. Whether you prefer a traditional autumn aesthetic or a Halloween extravagance, let your imagination run wild and celebrate the magic of the season. Happy pumpkin picking!
